SPECIAL EVENTS

special EventsEach year the Hartsdale Pet Cemetery conducts three special events specifically aimed at honoring the memories of all pet animals. The events are held at the front gate entrance. Plot holders as well as the general public are invited to attend. A formal program is developed for each special event complete with a central theme, brief talks by local and regional public officials, the directors and special guests who are tied in with the overall program topic.
WAR DOG MEMORIAL CELEBRATION
The first event of the year is the War Dog Memorial Celebration, usually held in mid-June. Originally this program was instituted to honor the memories of military canines who served our country during wartime. In recent years, however, the focus has been expanded to include all pets who have been of service to humanity such as dogs who are trained to assist police and fire dogs.

Past ceremonies have featured dogs from the U.S. Homeland Security, U.S. Army K-9 Corps, New York City Police Department, Metro-North Railroad Police Department, Greenville Fire Department, Guiding Eyes For The Blind, The Good Dog Foundation, Canine Companions, and Puppies Behind BarsDomestic canines who have exhibited acts of extraordinary heroism have also been cited. The event has included the participation of area Girl Scout and Boy Scout troops as well as American Legion members from the city of New Rochelle, NY.  A pet adoption day is also conducted by the Shelter Pet Alliance.

NATIONAL PET MEMORIAL DAY
On the second Sunday in the month of September, the Cemetery along with participating members of the
International Association of Pet Cemeteries (IAPC) holds an "open house" to commemorate National Pet Memorial Day.  A Blessing of The Animals is conducted by an interfaith minister.  Well-behaved animals of all species are invited to participate.  Animals must be under physical control and not pose a threat to the people or other animals in attendance.  If the actual animal is unable to be present, some representation of that pet can be blessed (for example, a picture, collar, leash, toy, etc.)  Service animals and K-9 officers are welcome.  A pet adoption day is also conducted by the Shelter Pet Alliance.

HOLIDAY TREE LIGHTING CEREMONY
In December, the Cemetery conducts its annual Tree Lighting Ceremony. The event is held on a Sunday afternoon and is scheduled shortly before Christmas Day.  In the spirit of the gift-giving season, the Cemetery asks for donations of packaged pet foods from the general public which we donate to local animal shelters.

PET ADOPTION DAYS
Since 2002 Hartsdale Canine Cemetery made it possible for plot-holders and the general public to adopt pets from an array of canines and felines brought to the grounds by volunteers from the
Shelter Pet Alliance.  The latter works with various area shelters to provide safe and comfortable homes for deserving dogs and cats.  Pet adoption days are held at the War Dog Memorial Celebration and Pet Memorial Day.
